The Parish
When the bells ring out for last orders at The Parish in York’s city centre, there are literally tonnes of them! The Grade II listed building was originally St John’s Church, dating back to the 12th century. With an over subscription of churches, it was deconsecrated in 1938 and continued through several guises before finally closing in 2000. The entire project, valued at £1.7 million, was managed by Kent Building Developments.
As a leading advocate for conservation, Steve Kent personally managed the entire project. Working with the client and architect from the onset, practical drawings and specifications were produced to meet the rigorous planning requirements governing listed buildings. He ensured that Construction Design & Management regulations were complied with on behalf of the client and programmed the entire works from cellar cooling and commercial kitchen through to the state of the art sound and light system.
Great care and sensitivity has been taken to blend the ancient with the modern, retaining the building’s historic features that include the church’s six massive iron bells - now safely stabilised on concealed steel beams. Now an integral part of York’s 21st century street scene, it’s more than the tills that are ringing!
