Village Farm

Transforming derelict barns and farm buildings into ‘dream homes’ is an area where Kent Building Developments really excels. Located in the heart of the village, the 200-year-old hand made clamped brick barn had deteriorated beyond the state of being on its last legs but now stands proud as an example of rural revival at its very best.

To preserve the barn’s heritage, the priority was to reuse existing features wherever possible. Today’s building regulations meant the main roof trusses couldn’t be integrated into the new roof structure. Not to be outdone, the trusses were craned to the ground, painstakingly repaired, cleaned and treated before being sunk into the walls on the upper level to provide dramatic design features.

The client had also requested that the footprint of the barn be increased to incorporate a new garden room. By sourcing matching reclaimed hand made bricks and reusing slate roofing tiles from the original structure, the resulting single storey extension looks like it’s always been there. But it’s a single storey with a twist – the ingenious roof design allowed for an oak double quarterwinder staircase to lead to the studio and study on the ‘virtual’ upper floor.
