As part of our Eco Corner reflections, we’re revisiting past projects that championed sustainability long before it was mainstream. This award-winning retrofit is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can stand the test of time.
Back in 2017, Kent Building Developments had the pleasure of collaborating with Phil Bixby of Constructive Individuals Architects on a modest yet visionary project in York. The property, a Victorian end-terrace on Hobmoor Terrace was purchased by Phil and his partner with a clear mission: to transform it into a low-impact, high-comfort home and workspace that honoured its heritage while embracing the future.
Project Goals
The brief was ambitious in its simplicity:
• Retrofit the existing structure to dramatically improve energy efficiency to a Passivhaus top level standard
• Extend the home to include a new kitchen, living space, and a dedicated office
• Maximise natural light and woodland views while mitigating summer overheating
This thoughtful approach to design and sustainability has now been recognised in a big way.
Triple Win at the 2024 York Design Awards
Six years after completion, the Hobmoor Terrace project was submitted to the York Design Awards and walked away with three prestigious accolades:
• The Lord Mayor’s Prize
• The Sustainable Design Award
• The Residential Award
Each award highlighted a different facet of the project’s success:
Design That Works With Nature
From the bold placement of photovoltaic panels on the end gable to the seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, every detail was carefully considered. The result is a home that’s not only beautiful and functional but also deeply respectful of its environment.
A plaque now adorns the exterior wall, marking the property’s award-winning status and its contribution to sustainable design in York.
